Welsh Wild Flowers by Angharad Menna | Portmeirion Moonstone China

A true celebration of heritage and botanical artistry, Welsh Wild Flowers was launched in 1994 as a premier design for the revolutionary Moonstone range. The collection was designed by Angharad Menna, daughter of Susan Williams-Ellis and an accomplished botanical illustrator in her own right. Her crisp, contemporary illustrations of Welsh hillside flowers offer a fresh perspective on the traditional botanical theme, perfectly capturing the spirit of the countryside.

The Innovation of Portmeirion China

Welsh Wild Flowers served as a showcase for Portmeirion’s 1994 technical breakthrough: Portmeirion China. Following years of research, the pottery developed a material with the translucency and strength of fine bone china and porcelain, but entirely free of animal bone.

To honor this feat, Susan Williams-Ellis sculpted the Moonstone shape—a sophisticated, flowing silhouette designed to complement Angharad’s hillside floral motifs. This range was one of the "Foundational Five" designs launched on Moonstone, alongside:

  • Ancestral Jewels (by Anwyl Cooper-Willis)

  • Ladies Flower Garden

  • Summer Garland

  • Moonstone Gold

A Collector’s Welsh Heritage Piece

Because Angharad Menna’s designs are so distinct from her mother’s 18th-century herbarium style, this range is highly prized for its modern, "airy" feel. It remains the definitive choice for collectors looking for vegan-friendly fine china that honours Welsh botanical history.
