Summer Fruits | Hand-Painted by The Longton Ladies

In the early 1990's, Margaret Brian—a former Wedgwood paintress and Portmeirion lithographer—spearheaded a revolutionary Hand Painting Department at the factory. Her team, affectionately known as The Longton Ladies, consisted of the most skilled artisans in the United Kingdom. Their work was so technically superior that it was sought after by the world's most prestigious department stores.

The "Summer Fruits" Motif

Released in 1994, Summer Fruits was developed by Margaret Brian to capture the lush, sun-drenched aesthetic of an English orchard.

  • The Design: The motif features a vibrant arrangement of apples, pears, and cherries.

  • The Technique: Unlike the transfer-printed Botanic Garden, Summer Fruits was entirely hand-painted. This allowed for subtle depth, varied shading, and a textural quality where the brushstrokes are visible on the surface.

  • Exclusivity: The design mirrored the high-end exclusive lines Margaret Brian created for Harrods (Lemon Grove) and Lawleys (Orchard Fruits).

The Painter’s Signature

The most fascinating aspect for collectors is the painter's mark. Every Longton Lady left her own distinct signature or mark on the base of the item she painted.

  • Individual Artistry: No two pieces of Summer Fruits are identical. The tilt of a cherry or the blush on an apple varies based on the "hand" of the artist.

  • Rarity: Because the department was closed in the spring of 1997 due to restructuring, the window of production for these hand-painted masterpieces was only three years.

Collector’s Insight: The "Signature" Hunt

In the 2026 market, "Signed" Portmeirion is a high-growth category.

  • Provenance: Identifying which of The Longton Ladies painted your piece adds significant value. Common marks include initials or small personal symbols tucked near the backstamp.

  • Condition: Because the paint is applied over or within the glaze in a specialised process, collectors look for pieces where the pigment remains vibrant and free of the "scuffing" that can occur with hand-painted earthenware.
