Weeping Hearts | Rare 1986 Floral Design
Launched in 1986, Weeping Hearts was Susanâs personal re imagining of the Dicentra (Bleeding Heart) plant. Inspired by an 18th-century illustration found on an antique piece of Minton pottery, Susan famously decided to rename the design. Feeling that "Bleeding Hearts" sounded too melancholic, she opted for the more poetic and "less miserable" Weeping Hearts.
The "Romantic" Aesthetic
To complement the delicate, drooping nature of the flower, Susan placed the motif on her Romantic-shaped ware. This shape, with its soft curves and traditional silhouettes, provided the perfect canvas for the vibrant pinks and greens of the Dicentra.
Vibrant Simplicity: Unlike the "busy" botanical layouts of other ranges, Weeping Hearts relied on the stark, stunning beauty of a single plant type.
Cottage Garden Charm: The design perfectly captured the mid-80's desire for "Cottage" aestheticsâsimple, nature-focused, and unapologetically feminine.
The Challenge of the Single Motif
Despite its beauty, the range was withdrawn relatively quickly. Susan herself believed the reason for its limited success was purely psychological:
The "Botanic Garden" Effect: Collectors of the era had become accustomed to the "variety" of Botanic Garden, where every plate featured a different flower.
Collectability: Because Weeping Hearts featured only the single Dicentra motif, Susan felt it lacked the "hunt" factor that drove people to complete a multi-motif set.
Collectorâs Insight: The "Hard to Find" Gem
In 2026, the scarcity of Weeping Hearts has actually increased its desirability. It is now considered a "boutique" range for those who prefer a cohesive, matching look rather than a varied botanical mix.
Rarity: Because of its short production run, finding a full dinner service is a significant achievement for any collector.
The "Minton" Connection: Knowing the design's origin on 18th-century Minton pottery adds a layer of "connoisseurship" to the range, making it a favourite for those who appreciate ceramic history.
