Summer Strawberries | Vintage Angharad Menna Design

Launched in 1980, Summer Strawberries is a vibrant celebration of the British summer. The collection holds a special place in Portmeirion’s history as it was designed by Angharad Menna, daughter of Susan Williams-Ellis. To capture the authentic essence of the fruit, Angharad spent countless hours in the gardens of her mother's home, meticulously drawing and painting the strawberry plants from life.

Artistry from the Garden

The resulting design is a masterclass in botanical realism. Rather than a stylised motif, Summer Strawberries features the lush green leaves, delicate white blossoms, and ripening red fruits of the strawberry plant in a way that feels organic and "freshly picked."

A Global Favourite: The Italian Connection

While the design was a staple in British homes, it achieved extraordinary success in the Italian market. Its bright, cheerful palette and rustic elegance resonated deeply with Mediterranean dining styles, making it one of Portmeirion’s most successful international exports throughout the 1980's and 90's.

Collector’s Note: A 20-Year Legacy

After nearly two decades of continuous production, the Summer Strawberries range was retired in 1999. Because of its long production run, it remains one of the most accessible and beloved patterns for those looking to build a "country kitchen" set. However, finding pieces in pristine condition—where the vibrant reds of the berries haven't faded—is a top priority for serious collectors today.
