Starfire Jade | Rare 2001 Crystalline Glaze
Launched in 2001, the Starfire collection was the brainchild of Julian Teed, Portmeirionâs former Creative Director. Teed utilised the classic silhouettes designed by Susan Williams-Ellis but applied a radical, high-tech crystalline firing processâa technique never before attempted in the Portmeirion factory.
The Magic of Crystalline Glaze
The Starfire range is defined by its "living" glaze. Unlike standard glazes that melt into a smooth, uniform glass, crystalline glazes are designed to grow actual zinc-silicate crystals within the kiln.
Jewel-Like Patina: As the kiln cools at a precise, slowed rate, the minerals in the glaze "bloom" into visible crystals. These create an iridescent sheen and a multi-dimensional, shimmering effect.
Two-Tone Design: Each piece features a sophisticated two-tone finish, where the crystalline "starbursts" contrast against a deep, saturated base colour.
Total Individuality: Because the crystals grow organically during firing, no two pieces are identical. The size, shape, and placement of the "stars" are entirely unique to each item.
The Starfire Colourways
The collection was produced in four distinct, gemstone-inspired palettes:
Jade: A deep, mesmerising green (the most iconic of the range).
Opal: A soft, iridescent white and cream.
Ruby: A rich, volcanic red.
Sapphire: A deep, celestial blue.
Collectorâs Insight: The "Short Window" Rarity
The Starfire range was only in production for a very short period, from 2001 to 2002. The technical difficulty of the crystalline process meant that yield rates were often lower than standard ranges, making surviving pieces highly sought after in 2026.
Surface Quality: Because the crystals sit within the glaze, the surface has a unique, tactile "depth." Collectors look for pieces with large, well-defined crystal blooms.
Modern Classic: While Botanic Garden is traditional, Starfire is firmly established as a "Modern Classic," perfect for contemporary minimalist interiors.
