Rose and Passion Flower | Rare 1977 Folk Art Design

Launched in late 1977, Rose and Passion Flower was Susan Williams-Ellis’s answer to those who found the Botanic Garden range too "scientific." Adapted from a late 18th-century watercolour, this design captures a relaxed, painterly beauty, focusing on a single, consistent motif rather than a variety of species.

The Folk Art Influence

What makes this range truly stand out is its unique border. Susan drew inspiration from Barge Ware (the traditional folk art of the UK’s canal boats), creating a petal-shaped border that mimics the look of hand-painted brushstrokes.

  • The Palette: A delicate harmony of pale blue, leaf green, and soft pink.

  • The "Barge Ware" Border: This pale blue border adorns the flatware (plates and saucers) and was so successful that Susan’s daughter later utilized a similar style for the famous Welsh Dresser range.

  • Consistency: Unlike other ranges where motifs vary by item size, the Rose and Passion Flower motif remains the same across the entire collection.

From Giftware to Dinnerware

Originally, Portmeirion intended for this range to be a limited "giftware" line (vases, trinket boxes, etc.). However, its immediate popularity was so overwhelming that just one month after launch, the decision was made to expand it into a full service, mirroring the extensive item list of Botanic Garden.

Collector’s Insight: The Five-Year Window

Despite its early success, the range was discontinued in 1983. Because it was produced for a relatively short time compared to the "Big Two" (Botanic and Pomona), finding complete dinner sets is becoming a challenge for 2026 collectors.

  • Flatware vs. Hollowware: The pale blue brushstroke border on the plates is particularly prone to "stacking wear," so finding pieces with a crisp, un-scuffed border is a high priority for serious archivists.

  • Aesthetic Pairing: It is a favourite for those who love "Cottage style" or "English Country House" styling, as it feels more antique and handmade than the standard botanical lines.
