Red Dragon | The Rare & Recalled Cookware
Red Dragon Cookware is perhaps the most elusive and controversial range ever produced by Portmeirion. Designed to be both "ornamental and useful," it was based on a sophisticated new fluted shape. However, technical failures led to its swift withdrawal, making it very desirable to the most determined (and careful) collectors.
The Design: Fire and Shadow
The name "Red Dragon" comes from the unique and dramatic glazing process:
The Technique: A black clay slip was used as an undercoat, which was then covered with a vibrant, translucent red glaze.
The "Individual" Look: On the raised fluted edges, the black undercoat peeked through the red, giving each piece a "smoldering" or "volcanic" individuality.
The Body: Unlike standard earthenware, Red Dragon utilised a fully vitrified stoneware body, intended to withstand high oven temperatures.
The Recall: A Technical Failure
Despite its stunning appearance, the Red Dragon range suffered from two major setbacks that led to its demise:
Thermal Shock: The larger stoneware items proved unstable in high-heat environments. Reports of dishes cracking or even shattering in the oven became common, leading to safety concerns.
Regulatory Issues: The specific chemicals used to achieve that "gorgeous red" glaze did not pass the rigorous safety regulations set by the USA (FDA). Consequently, the range was withdrawn from both the American and UK markets.
Collector’s Warning & Value
Because the range was withdrawn so early, surviving examples are incredibly rare. However, for a collector in 2026, there are specific rules for "The Dragon":
For Display Only: Due to the risk of cracking and the glaze safety issues, Red Dragon pieces should be treated as ornamental cabinet pieces only and never used for cooking or serving food.
Individuality: Because of the slip-and-glaze method, no two pieces are identical. Collectors look for items where the black "peek-through" is particularly crisp on the fluting.
