Parian Ware | British Heritage Collection 1984

In 1984, Portmeirion reached back into the Kirkham’s Pottery archives to revive a classic Victorian medium: Parian Ware. Named for its resemblance to fine Parian marble, this unglazed "bisque" porcelain allowed Portmeirion to reproduce the incredibly intricate modelling of 19th-century moulds with a level of detail that a standard thick glaze would have obscured.

The British Heritage Collection

The range was a celebration of Victorian craftsmanship, focusing on high-relief textures and classical forms. The collection included:

• The Heritage Jugs: Two distinct collections of jugs featuring ornate scenes and floral reliefs.

• Petite Bud Vases: Delicate, small-scale vessels perfect for single stems.

• The Portland Vase Replica: A miniature version of the world-famous Roman glass masterpiece, rendered in matte white porcelain.

• Neptune Planters: Re-incorporating the nautical themes found in Susan’s earlier work, such as Kingdom of the Sea.

The 1990 "Fraud Prevention" Shift

Because Portmeirion’s Parian Ware so perfectly mimicked the look and feel of 19th-century originals, it unintentionally created a problem in the antique market. Unscrupulous dealers were removing the printed Portmeirion script backstamp and passing the items off as genuine Victorian antiques.

• 1984–1989: Items feature a printed script base mark. These are the "First Editions" but require careful inspection.

• 1990 Onward: Portmeirion changed the mark to an embossed (impressed) stamp. Because this mark is physically part of the porcelain, it cannot be removed without damaging the piece, providing a permanent guarantee of its 20th-century origin.

Collector’s Insight: The "Bisque" Aesthetic

Parian Ware is highly sought after in 2026 by those who prefer Minimalist or Neoclassical decor. Unlike the vibrant Botanic Garden, these pieces rely entirely on light and shadow to show off their designs. Finding a piece with no "scuffs" to the matte surface is the goal for a serious collector.
