Oranges and Lemons | 1975 Mediterranean Design

Launched in 1975, Oranges and Lemons is a vibrant celebration of the citrus groves surrounding Susan Williams-Ellis’s home in Ibiza. Unlike her earlier botanical ranges which relied on historical engravings, this design was hand-painted by Susan herself, capturing the organic energy and "dexterity" of her personal artistic style.

A Design That Radiates

One of the most clever aspects of this range is how Susan utilised the ceramic "canvas." In a departure from typical Portmeirion sets:

• Radiating Saucers: The tea and coffee cup saucers feature sprays of citrus foliage that "peek out" from under the cups. This creates a beautiful visual burst when the set is placed on a table.

• Motif Scaling: Larger pieces, such as dinner plates and platters, showcase a lush mix of both orange and lemon motifs. Smaller items, like salt and pepper pots, focus on a single, perfectly rendered fruit.

• Invigorating Palette: The high-contrast yellows, deep oranges, and lush greens were designed to feel "invigorating," making it a favourite for 1970's sunrooms and kitchens.

Production & Rarity

Oranges and Lemons enjoyed an eight-year production run, eventually being withdrawn in 1983.

• The "Fresh" Collector’s Market: Because the range was withdrawn over 40 years ago, sets in "mint" condition (without the crazing or staining common in 70's earthenware) are becoming increasingly valuable.

• The Ibiza Connection: For fans of Susan’s work, this range is a direct link to her personal life and her time spent painting en plein air in the Mediterranean.

Collector's Note

While Botanic Garden is formal, Oranges and Lemons is casual and artistic. It is highly sought after by those who prefer a "Coastal" or "Rustic Italian" kitchen aesthetic. It pairs beautifully with solid-colour glazes in yellow or forest green.
