Garden Herbs | Pat Albeck National Trust Design

The Garden Herbs collection is a masterclass in subtle, English elegance. It was created by the "Queen of the Tea Towel," Pat Albeck, specifically for the National Trust. While Pat was globally renowned for her vibrant, bold textiles and wallpapers, this range shows a different, more delicate side of her artistic output.

The Art of the "Felt Pen" Technique

Dating from a period when hand-drawn charm was paramount, the Garden Herbs motifs are uniquely rendered in soft, delicate shades of green. Interestingly, the design appears to have been drawn with coloured felt pens—a modern, free-hand technique that allowed for fine lines and a transparent quality. This was a method Susan Williams-Ellis herself was fond of, making this collaboration a perfect artistic match for the Portmeirion factory.

Pat Albeck (1930–2017): A Design Icon

Commissioned by the National Trust to create several exclusive ranges, Pat Albeck was a designer of "astonishing output." Her career spanned:

  • Tableware & Textiles: Including her legendary decorative tea towels.

  • Wallpapers & Dress Fabrics: For iconic brands and boutiques.

  • Children's Books & Accessories: Showcasing her versatile, whimsical style.

Subtle Heritage for the Modern Home

Unlike the high-contrast botanical ranges of the 1970s, Garden Herbs offers a toned-down, monochromatic palette. It features a variety of culinary and medicinal herbs, making it the ideal choice for a country-style kitchen or for collectors who prefer a more minimalist, "slow-living" aesthetic. Because it was a National Trust commission, pieces from this range often carry an extra layer of nostalgic British heritage.
