Botanic Garden Variations | 1990–2000 Formal Range

In 1990, the world’s most famous botanical pottery underwent a sophisticated transformation. Anwyl Cooper-Willis, daughter of Susan Williams-Ellis, led a major re-styling event to create Botanic Garden Variations. By skillfully re-arranging and re-sizing her mother's iconic motifs, Anwyl produced a collection with a distinctly more formal and structured feel than the original 1972 range.

Design Elements & The "Cartouche" Border

The hallmark of the Variations range is its intricate use of the classic Portmeirion leaf border. Each piece features a redesigned border containing decorative cartouches—framed panels filled with miniature, delicately detailed versions of the original flower motifs.

This clever reduction in scale allowed Portmeirion to:

  • Expand the Collection: Smaller motifs meant the patterns could be applied to more delicate items and smaller pottery pieces that the original large-scale designs couldn't accommodate.

  • Formalise the Table: The "Cartouche" design created a more traditional, "fine-china" appearance while maintaining the beloved botanical DNA.

  • Modernise a Classic: The re-styling offered a contemporary alternative for 1990's interiors, bridging the gap between casual earthenware and formal dining.

A Limited Decade of Production

Despite its immense success and popularity, the Variations pattern was only produced for a decade, eventually being discontinued in 2000. This ten-year production window makes pieces increasingly difficult to find on the secondary market. Because it shares the same colour palette as the standard Botanic Garden, it is a favourite for collectors who want to mix and match to create a unique, "layered" table setting.
