Barnyard | Hand-Painted by the Longton Ladies

In the early 1990's, Portmeirion made a bold commitment to traditional craftsmanship by establishing a dedicated hand-painting department. This elite team of artisans became known as "The Longton Ladies," and their work represented the pinnacle of ceramic artistry in the UK. One of the most cherished results of this studio was the Barnyard range, launched in 1996.

Designed by Debbie Wood

Barnyard was designed by the renowned and highly skilled paintress Debbie Wood. Created exclusively for the Midlands-based china shop chain 'James the Second,' the range featured a delightful cast of farm animals, including:

  • Chickens, Cows, and Ducks

  • Pigs, Sheep, and even a Barn Cat

The Signature of the Artist

What makes the Barnyard range (and its sister patterns) so collectable is the human touch. While Debbie Wood painted the majority of the Barnyard items herself, other experienced paintresses from the Portmeirion Studio also contributed.

Collector’s Tip: Every piece produced by the Longton Ladies features a unique signature mark on the base, left by the specific paintress who decorated it. Identifying these marks allows collectors to "follow" the work of their favourite artist.

The Legacy of the Longton Ladies (1990–1997)

The hand-painting department was responsible for some of Portmeirion's most prestigious "store exclusives" of the decade, including:

Despite producing work that was far superior to anything else available in the UK at the time, the department was sadly closed in the Spring of 1997 during a company re-structuring. This makes any hand-painted piece from this seven-year window a rare and finite treasure.
