Greek Key | Iconic 1963 Monochrome Design

The Greek Key range is the ultimate expression of Mid-Century Modern minimalism. Born from a chance discovery of a 19th-century copper plate in the Kirkham’s Pottery archives, Susan Williams-Ellis adapted the ancient geometric motif for the silkscreen process. The result was a design so timeless it remained in production for two decades, becoming an undisputed classic of British industrial design.

The Evolution of the Key

While the motif remained constant, the colourways shifted to match the evolving tastes of the 60's and 70's:

  • Gold on Matt Black: Launched in 1963, this became the signature look of the range. The contrast of the gleaming gold against the flat, velvet-like black finish was the height of 1960's "Boutique" style.

  • Gold on White: A cleaner, more architectural version of the design.

  • The "Pop Art" Era (1967): To keep pace with the psychedelic 60's, Portmeirion introduced vibrant new glazes in Turquoise and Orange. These brightly coloured versions are significantly rarer than the monochrome pieces and are highly prized by collectors.

From Coffee Pots to Kitchenalia

Greek Key was applied to an incredibly broad range of items, making it one of the most versatile sets to collect. Beyond the iconic Cylinder coffee sets, the design can be found on:

  • Storage Jars: Often used in modern kitchens as statement pieces.

  • Rolling Pins & Kitchen Accessories: Rare items that show how the design permeated the entire home.

  • Dinnerware: Unlike many of the graphic ranges, Greek Key was successfully expanded into full table service.

A Two-Decade Legacy

Production of the Greek Key range continued until 1983. Because of this long lifespan, the range is accessible to new collectors, though the early 1960's orange and turquoise variants remain the "prized" finds. Its geometric simplicity ensures it remains just as relevant in a 2026 interior as it was in a 1960's London apartment.
