Miniatures | Rare Tea Sets & 25th Anniversary Sets
Portmeirion has a long and enchanting history of producing miniature items. What began in the 1960's as functional tools for the pottery trade eventually evolved into a dedicated category of high-quality collectables, celebrating the brand's most iconic designs in "dollhouse" scale.
The Salesman’s Samples (1966)
The very first miniatures were never intended for the public. In 1966, Susan Williams-Ellis decorated a series of travelling salesmen's samples with her Favorite Horsemen and Pantomime Characters designs. These allowed sales reps to carry the entire range in a single suitcase. Today, these early 1966 miniatures are incredibly rare and highly prized "insider" pieces.
The Collector’s Club Era (1980's)
As the "collectables" market boomed in the 1980's, Portmeirion expanded its miniature output:
Thimbles (1985): A set of twelve thimbles was commissioned for The Thimble Collectors Club in Surrey. These featured expertly "cut-down" Botanic Garden motifs, miniaturised to fit the tiny porcelain surface.
Trinket Boxes (1986): A range of bone china lidded boxes featured both Botanic Garden and Pomona designs.
Novelty Teapots (1992/3): The famous Paul Cardew miniature novelty teapots and brooches were launched, blending Cardew's whimsical shapes with Portmeirion’s classic patterns.
The 25th Anniversary Landmark (1997)
1997 marked a quarter-century of Botanic Garden—a range so successful it had produced an estimated 25 million items by that point. To celebrate, Susan produced the "Gold Standard" of miniatures:
The Shadow Box: A high-quality wooden frame containing a complete miniature tea set.
The Presentation Set: A superb china tea set and tray, sold in a luxury satin-lined box.
Quality & Detail: Unlike toy-grade miniatures, these anniversary pieces were made to the highest ceramic standards, featuring crisp transfers and delicate gilding.
Hinged & Enamelled Boxes (1996)
Just before the anniversary, Portmeirion released a range of hinged enamel and china boxes. These tiny masterpieces often featured intricate metalwork hinges and are a favourite for collectors of Limoges-style miniatures.
